Lifting Voices’ summer program, Building a Sustainable Community, conducts special outreach to youth who live in social service settings. The program enhances thinking skills and provides workplace readiness training.
15 young people who live in foster care, transitional housing, and group homes are invited to join us this summer. Weekday afternoons for a period of six weeks, they will engage in daily conversations and mentoring, and conduct weekly visits to stakeholders. Throughout the summer, youth will consider all aspects of community sustainability, including jobs, facilities, and the natural and cultural environment. Supper and snack is provided, and is available free of charge to youth in the community; please click here for more information about the meals program.

The culminating event for the summer program is the presentation of a youth-created neighborhood sustainability plan to the Office of Council Member Michael A. Brown. By presenting the plan that they themselves have created, young people will gain a sense of investment in their future as well as the concrete skills needed to develop a credible presentation on what their community needs.
